Engine 31 serves the Silver Spring Community Fire Company in a dual-role capacity. It's primary use as a tanker is to shuttle water from a water source to the fire scene while operating at a rural fire away from fire hydrants. However, Engine 31 is a hybrid vehicle known as a tanker/pumper which means it is capable in serving in the same role as a structural fire engine. Tankers are often used in large numbers depending on the severity of the fire. Organization of a tanker shuttle is a very difficult, but essential task at a rural fire incident. Multiple vehicles must be coordinated between the fill site and the dump site often resembling an air traffic control situation.
